MISSION STATEMENT

Waterpark Montessori is a private college with extensive experience and international references, based on the educational ideology of Dr. Maria Montessori, which is committed to providing education of excellence in Norway for training Montessori teachers to international standards

HISTORY                                                                                              back to top

Waterpark Montessori AS is a limited company in Norway. It is owned by Waterpark Training Services Limited (Ireland).

In 1991 Clare Healy, from Ireland, started giving Montessori part-time training in Oslo for pre-school and school under the control of Montessori St. Nicholas London. In 1998 Montessori St. Nicholas was amalgamated with another college and this provided an opportunity to establish a Norwegian Montessori training. Clare Healy established Waterpark Montessori in Norway. Waterpark was able to reach students in all parts of Norway using modern flexible teaching methods such as intensive seminar workshops and internet learning. With the co-operation of Montessori teachers of different backgrounds in Norway the basic Montessori curriculum was expanded and adapted to suit Scandinavia.

AGE GROUPS                                                                                      back to top

Waterpark Montessori is one of the few colleges internationally that has training for all age groups in the one centre. The 3-6 years (pre-school) 6-9 and 9-12 years (school) programmes are well established but continue to be upgraded. An Infant Toddler programme had been initiated under Montessori St. Nicholas and was later fully developed with the help of an advisor from the USA.

Waterpark has a history of close co-operation with SMI (Svenska Montessori Institute) and in 2003 they together established an Adolescent 12+ years training which continues to run in both Oslo and Gothenburg. The Adolescent programme for Montessori has not been fully developed anywhere in the world although a core research group in USA promise a curriculum in 2012. Training programmes (including Waterpark) are based on adapting the Montessori core principles, including Erdkinder, to the demands of a modern day school and curriculum for this age group.

QUALITY                                                                                              back to top

Waterpark is a member of Montessori Europe. The college follows a quality programme that includes staff training using internationally recognised standards. In 2009 the experienced staff of the college continues to refine and improve the training programmes for each age group, while Clare Healy acts as course advisor and developer. A long established partnership with Oslo Montessori Skole has provided the college with a school premises and a wide selection of Montessori materials for the practical elements of the training. With ten years of experience in internet training, Waterpark has an excellent online learning environment that provides reflective learning in theory and in the application of theory during student internships with children.

MONTESSORI TEACHING METHODS                                                   back to top

Montessori for any age group may be understood intellectually but is very difficult to put into practice within our social structures. Therefore a particular form of Montessori teacher training is used worldwide. This demands deep reflection, repetition and analysis of theory and materials. Scholarly comparison of Montessori with other theories is not encouraged until students have a thorough understanding of Montessori theory and how it works in practice.
